Keeping Your Home Safe While Away on Vacation

Summer is officially here and that means summer getaways are just around the corner. Here are some safety tips to keep your housekeeping black belt in place so you will never have to experience any summer spoilers to dampen the carefree, fun months ahead!

Create the Impression that Someone is Home

Nobody wants to break into a house that’s occupied! Make use of light timers and program your interior lights to turn on for several hours each night. You can even set your TV to turn on as well just to make it more believable! Arrange for someone to mow at least once a week and to see to your garbage and recycling bins. Consider motion sensors for your front, back and side doors. Don’t tidy up too much before you leave. Keeping up the appearance of activities in your home will block off potential burglary.

Hold your Mail

A huge pile of mail on the front doorstep, or envelopes pouring out your mail slot is an instant tip-off that no one’s home. Go to the post office to place a hold on your mail. Put a hold on your daily paper, too. Or, you can ask a trusted neighbor to collect the goods daily.

Keep Mum...For Now

Never, ever announce your departure or vacation dates on social networks. With ever-changing security settings, it’s always hard to tell what’s private and what’s not. Stay on the safe side, and don’t go news anchor about your trip. Save the excitement with tales to tell and photos to upload when you get back from your vacation. But do inform trusted friends that you’ll be away. That way, they’ll know how to contact you in case of emergency.

Bring on the Alarm

Don’t forget to enable your alarm system and to inform your home security company that you’ll be away. Install fake security cameras, if you have to. Do whatever it takes to get across the message that your home is not one to mess with!

Unplug!

The excitement of a vacation can be distracting, so remember to protect your home from fire and power surge by unplugging all appliances. Big or small (and that goes to your coffee maker too before you leave), you’ve got to unplug. Be safe than sorry.
